I thought Amy Winehouse was a black woman the way this soulful songstress seduced my ears with the breath-taking cut, "Just Friends" (Back to Black, 2006). I mean, when my guy played this song for me, I was seriously duped into thinking it was a new joint by Jill Scott. Surprised!? Shocked? Nah, more like, greatly respected and instantly accepted. I'm a music lover. One of those that kindly separate an individual's demons, in this case, severe drug abuse, from their innate musical capabilities.
Having no prior knowledge of Winehouse's battle with drug addiction, eating disorders, alleged suicide attempts and everything else noted in the tabloids; the only thing I cared about is this chic was amazingly talented and strangely unique--and when I heard she was teaming up with Questlove from The Roots Crew and Raphael Saadiq...WOW! How dope would that melodic mixture of soul, hip-hop with a touch of jazz have been for us fans who crave that G.O.O.D. music! (Ok, maybe dope was the wrong word to use at the moment). Yo, these are just my thoughts on a young artist with an old soul that had more potential than many of these useless musicians in the industry today.
Addiction is truly an illness, and I can't imagine the hurt this young artist was dealing with to take this path. You know, they say the brightest stars burn the fastest--and in the astronomy world, this is no myth: The largest stars have the shortest life span. I just wish to God that these astronomical principles could not be applied to the entertainment world too.
You have not been forgotten:
Jimmy, Janis, Kurt, Aaliyah, Shannon (Blind Melon), Biggie, Baatin, Selena, Nate...all the rest.
.peace.
